Newquay Riding Club Sucess

Newquay Riding Club qualified their junior jumping team for the British National Championships held at Lincolnshire showground. 25 teams were taking part in the event from as far as Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Newquay team members were; Heidi Mercer (14) riding Riverside Candyman, Zoe Barbery (11) riding Westcombe Humbug, Donna Sturdy (12) riding Sir Wallace and Katie Howard (13) riding Diptford Dreams of Glory. All the riders proudly wore team jackets with their name and their ponies names embroiled on the back.

The girls had to ride the first round of jumps over a tough and challenging course at 2ft 9in. high and then jump the second round of higher fences ranging from 3ft to 3ft 3in. which was timed. Not all got double clears and the team carried 9 faults which was good enough to secure them fourth place overall in the team event.

Heidi Mercer gained a double clear which put her in good stead for a place in the individual competition. Heidi had to jump another round against the clock, gaining a great time she came away with third place. Donna Sturdy was the only rider from Newquay to gain her qualification in the individual Junior Open National final on her second horse Rocheros Zibinka. Donna got clear in the first round but sadly dropped two fences in the timed jump off. Katie Howard was the only representative for Newquay in the Junior Equitation Jumping where they are judged on their style whilst jumping. Katie gained a good clear round and ended up mid field with 159 points which wasn't such a bad score at her first ever attempt at a national final, the winner gained 180 points so marks were quite close.
