Mammouth Carrot Crunch

The annual 'Mammoth Carrot Crunch' which has turned more than a hundred tonnes of carrots into thousands of pounds used to stop cruelty to horses will take place again at the Equine Fair Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 December. At last years event 22 tonnes of carrots were sold raising £4400 for the International League for the Protection of Horses (ILPH).

The ILPH have 1800 horses and ponies on their loan scheme ranging from Warmblood dressage horses to miniature Shetlands as companions. At this time of the year the ILPH find it most difficult. With 17 field officers dealing daily with complaints from the public regarding all aspects of equine welfare the society is not a rest home for horses but, do take them into their care aiding with whatever treatment they require at their rehab farms before they are offered to the general public on loan. Believing that all horses should do whatever they are capable of. Their guiding philosophy being 'A world where horses are used but NEVER abused'.

The ILPH have very successfully loaned 'ILPH Boxer' to Carol Dunster from Bugle who has been a great ambassador in Cornwall for the ILPH. Boxer has won numerous jumping events with Carol since she has had him and has started this winter jumping season off to a great start by winning the 3ft open at Pendavey Equestrian Centres show jumping event last month and taking the red rosette in the first pairs event at the Spurs show jumping evening. Carol loves him dearly and explained that even though you never actually own an ILPH horse in the sense that you are not allowed to sell them on, it is just as good as owning your very own horse. The ILPH give regular visits to their loanees to ensure that the horses are in good condition and offer good practical horse ownership advice.

The Carrot Crunch is an important fund raiser for the ILPH at £2.50 per bag for which you receive a £3 voucher to redeem against feed stuffs at your local Dodson and Horrell supplier. 100 percent of the money collected will go directly to the ILPH to help with its work in preventing live exports of equines across Europe and other pressing welfare needs in the UK. At this years event they are asking for donations of any clean and re-usable tack, bits, bridles, rugs etc that they can circulate and use in their welfare cases.

Jeff Harrington is the field officer for the South West area (Bristol to Penzance). At present he is hoping to find some land to create a rehab farm for the ILPH in the South West as the nearest is in Wales.

If anyone has any land that they think would be suitable please contact Jeff at his office on (01647) 441070 The same number applies if you are wanting to offer a home to an ILPH horse or pony.
