Safren Retires

Annie Joppe from Goonhavern rode her favourite reliable horse Safren in his last competitive Endurance Ride to victory in the Little Dragon ER (80km) Ride, Builth Wells, Powys. As she has decided to retire him from competition.

Annie said that she had every intention in finishing his last ride in first place. With over 40 starters and awful weather conditions the going was very slippery in places.

Safren always made light of any difficult condition and the Little Dragon ride was no exception. Presenting himself at each vetgate in first position. However, they were caught on the last leg and they took it easily up the last two steep hills this meant that Safren had to race to the finish to ensure he took the lead which he did comfortably. His average speed of the event was about 16.5kph.

Annie said; "I owe so much to him; he is the bravest, toughest and cleverest horse I know, he always gives his best".

The next day Annie rode Oision's Wizard in the FEI2* (80km) Ride and the weather had become much better. Although the surface was very deep and greasy which meant the ride had to be taken much slower than the day before. Annie started in front with Katie Smith and soon lost the rest of the field. Wizard's heart rates were astonishing, arriving in to both vetgates on 53bpm. Katie started the last loop 30 seconds ahead of Annie who decided to let her go and just get Wizard home safely. Wizard was so positive on the last leg he galloped across the top after walking up the endless hill and nearly caught Katie up without even trying. Annie said; "The high point was the last gallop over the top with Builth Wells spread out below us. So spectacular and there were no low points at all".
