Indoor Cross Country

The penultimate leg in the Indoor Cross Country Accumulator Series was held at Pendavey Equestrian Centre on 5 March. Most of the regular combinations were present as they aimed to consolidate or increase their standings in this popular series. In some of the classes the final placings will not be decided until the last round in April and competition for the trophies awarded to the top six combinations is still intense.

As has become expected for this venue the presentation of the fences was of a high standard. In one particular arrangement an array of spring flowers surrounded the water wheel jump. An imaginative use of foliage complimented the various rustic and portable cross country fences used.

The first class (1ft 6 -1ft 9) encourages the less experienced combinations to participate and enjoy themselves. Fittingly one of the youngest entries Sophie Chaplin riding her friend Lauren Moore’s dependable pony Vanilla Essence took first place from regular supporter Eva Walton on Twilight. Sophie was taking part in her first competition and was grateful for the assistance provided by Kelly Fry as they produced the quickest clear round in the jump off. An unfortunate two fences down in the jump off for Lucy Booth and her young New Forest pony Galloper resulted in third place.

A member of North Cornwall Pony Club Chloe Brown consolidated her previous achievements at Pendavey with a win in the 2ft class. Chloe and her chestnut pony Daisy are beginning to develop a strong partnership as demonstrated by their competitive jump off round. second place went to Jemma Brown on Tetley with Olivia Walton and Ptarmigan, the only other combination reaching the jump off, taking third.

The most popular class is held over the 2ft 3 course, with Stephanie Smith and her attractively marked pony Tiger Lily continuing their good form in this class. Their deceptively fast time in the jump off could not be beaten though other competitors tried in vain to record a quicker time. Sarah McCormack and Talisman finished in second from Abi Glencross and her keen little pony Splashman.

The first in a hat trick of wins for Jemma Parsons and Caesar came in the 2ft 6 class. Jemma and Skiz, as he’s known at home, have been virtually unbeatable over the courses at Pendavey during the Winter months. One of only three combinations reaching the jump off their quick clear round took first place. A well judged round by Briony Eddy and Silverdeer Cherry was rewarded with second place with Stephanie and Tiger Lily in third.

Repeating their earlier success in the 2ft 3 class Stephanie and Tiger Lily were the winners of the 2ft 9. With her confidence growing Briony rode an attacking round on her 13hh pony Silverdeer Cherry as they took second place from Lucy Booth riding another New Forest pony Harrison. Clear rounds over the 3ft course proved difficult with Jemma and Caesar emerging as eventual winners from Zoe Andrew and Gina. Less than three tenths of a second separated these two in an exciting jump off. Third place went to the fastest 4 faults from the first round, Sally Sanders and Sky.

The final placings for the 3ft 3 class were decided without a jump off with only Jemma and Caesar completing the course without any penalties. Second place went to Briony Eddy and Silverdeer Cherry from Zoe Andrew and Gina.

With a dressage event on 19 March, a fun show on 25 March, the final leg in the Indoor Cross Country Series on 2 April and a hunter trial on 9 April Pendavey Equestrian Centre is holding varied competitions that should satisfy all equestrians in the area. Summer qualifiers for the Showjumping Championships of Great Britain are also proposed. For further details contact Fliss at Rose Equestrian 01208 895020
